Technical Writer and
Learning Designer

Translating Technical Information into Business Language

About me image
Hello, I’m Jody Caulton, an Atlanta, Georgia-based technical writer and learning designer consultant. This is my website for showcasing an array of my technical writing and instructional design product samples. Look it over and tell me what you think.

I have accumulated decades of experience producing clear and easy-to-interpret documentation for individuals, government agencies, and industry-leading clients. I have a passion for taking complex technical jargon or capturing generational knowledge and translating it into simple written language and consumable deliverables that's easy for end-users and learners to rapidly access, and act upon.

Can I help you with producing top-notch technical documentation or managing instructional/training content development on your next project? My most common technical writing and authoring deliverables include:

  • Business Requirements Document (BRD): documents the solution, the business needs of the client/business owners, and highlights the AS-IS and TO-BE state of the business
  • Functional Requirements Document (FRD): documents the software’s functionality in detail that the application developers agree to provide
  • System/Software User Guide: documents that explain and provide information on a software application’s composition, capabilities, or use
  • Business Processes: documents that explain a series of actions which occur across several roles or between multiple individuals
  • Standard Operating Procedures: documents that dictate the discrete steps to achieve an outcome, performed by a single individual
  • Work Instructions: documents that are easily-referenced with detailed focus on completing a single task
  • Policies: documents that establish enforceable rules or mandatory behaviors
  • Guidelines: documents that recommend best practices or suggested behaviors
Additionally, I'm adept in providing  expert support in:
  • Project-managed services for technical documentation or learning content development/design projects
  • Dissertation research, editing and proofreading services

Release Notes

I authored and distributed these release notes alongside an update for a Siebel Case Management software. The document succinctly details the specific changes, feature enhancements, and bug fixes included in the product update.

Standard Operating Procedure

This project involved developing a library of over 75 standard operating procedures and 20 quick start job aids for an enterprise resource planning (ERP) solution provider designed for small-to-medium transit agencies. The information was captured through interviews with subject matter experts, and reviewing system design and functional requirement materials to create content and organize it for the client's end users. The product’s comprehensive documentation library is highly regarded by end users and has become a key selling point for the software.
